Under the Influence: The Official Art Tribute to the Beastie Boys - Gallery 1988, Los Angeles, CA - Jan. 8-29, 2009

UNDER THE INFLUENCE - ART TRIBUTE TO THE BEASTIE BOYS - GALLERY 1988, LOS ANGELES, CA

The Beastie Boys, the whiteboy rap fiends who found incredible success in the mid-to-late 80's but rocked the 90's with their smash hipster hit albums "Check Your Head" (1992), "Ill Communication" (1994), and "Hello Nasty" (1998), as well as with their defunct record label Grand Royal which nurtured an interesting aesthetic that was part-New York graffiti-inspired street style and part Japanese-inspired colorful cartoon wackiness (on which 90's lady band Luscious Jackson dwelled for their exemplary albums, including "In Search of Manny" (1992) and "Natural Ingredients" (1994)), are being paid proper tribute in the month of January with art by 100 artists featured at Gallery 1988 at 7020 Melrose Avenue (East of La Brea).

I love this idea, as I grew up creating art inspired by music and musicians. If you enjoy this kind of art too, I recommend stopping by if you're in L.A. If you need details on gallery hours, artists, etc., Flavorpill can help you out.

My super-cool niece-in-law got Rock Band for Playstation on her 11th birthday and this song nearly kicked our collective asses trying to beat it. On "Easy." Enjoy:

Spike Jonze directed the shizz out of this video. Funny and original.
